One of the tensions I run into with deep conversation (especially where disagreement is involved) is the temptation to always try to reframe the conversation in favor of my own perspective.
I’ve found that honestly engaging in such a way with a text, especially with another of differing opinions, viewpoints, and experiences can also help develop that same skill relationally and even with myself. The text becomes a mirror into the truth, instead of a target at which to take aim or point a finger.
Great thoughts. There’s something disarming about reading a shared text and using it as a medium for discussion. There will of course always be tribalists even in this context, but I think it’s a useful tool to use to connect with others across worldview boundaries.
